No one saves us but ourselves.
No one can and no one may.
We ourselves must walk the path:
Buddhas only show the way.
An loose interpretation of the Dhammapada, Verse 165 found in “Karma: A Story of Buddhist Ethics” (1894), by Paul Carus. The more literal translation of the verse is slightly different, this one being adapted for poetic verse in English.
Attana hi katam pipam
attana akatam papam
suddhi asuddhi paccattam
nanno annanam visodhaye.
By oneself indeed is evil done and by oneself is one defiled; by oneself is evil not done and by oneself is one purified. Purity and impurity depend entirely on oneself; no one can purify another.
